Sociophonetics of phonotactic phenomena in French

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to shed new light on the behaviour of 5 phonotactic phenomena in French, which have been shown to be rather sensitive to regional and/or stylistic variation: schwa deletion at the initial of polysyllabic words and in monosyllabic grammatical words, liaison, deletion of final postobstruent /l/ and /R/ and of /l/ in the 3 personal clitic subject pronoun ‘il’. The analysis is performed on a 13-hour speech corpus, labelled at different levels and including productions of 120 speakers originated from 3 French-speaking countries (Belgium, France and Switzerland) and recorded in two different tasks (reading and conversation). Beside the regional and stylistic variables, parameters such as speakers’ age and socioeconomic status are also taken into account. The results of the analysis show that the 5 phenomena are mostly dependent on the speaking style, but that the effects of the other variables is less relevant than expected.

Effects of prior phonotactic knowledge on infant word segmentation: the case of nonadjacent dependencies.
PURPOSE In this study, the authors explored whether French-learning infants use nonadjacent phonotactic regularities in their native language, which they learn between the ages of 7 and 10 months, to segment words from fluent speech. METHOD Two groups of 20 French-learning infants were tested using the head-turn preference procedure at 10 and 13 months of age. In Experiment 1, infants were fa...
متن کاملPhonotactic constraints help to overcome effects of schwa deletion in French.
In a crossmodal priming experiment, visual targets (e.g. RENARD, 'fox') were auditorily primed by either an intact [see text] 'the fox' or reduced form [see text] 'the fox' of the word. When schwa deletion gave rise to an initial cluster that respected the phonotactic constraints of French (e.g. [lapluz] 'the lawn' in which /pl/ is a legal word beginning in French), there was a processing cost ...
متن کاملThe role of speech production in phonological decoding during visual word recognition: evidence from phonotactic repair
The phonological decoding of non-native letter sequences during visual word recognition has been shown to be influenced by phonotactic constraints of the reader’s native language [Hallé, P. متن کاملA “Bat” Is Easier to Learn than a “Tab”: Effects of Relative Phonotactic Frequency on Infant Word Learning
Many studies have shown that during the first year of life infants start learning the prosodic, phonetic and phonotactic properties of their native language. In parallel, infants start associating sound sequences with semantic representations. However, the question of how these two processes interact remains largely unknown. The current study explores whether (and when) the relative phonotactic...
متن کاملExcellence in the Foreign Language Classroom: Escapades of a junior high school French teacher
Abstract Teaching and learning of French as a foreign language in any Anglophone country such as Ghana is an extremely difficult task to undertake both on the part of the teacher and the student. This is evidenced in the general low performance of students in the subject at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level in both public and private schools over the years. This case stud...
